Promising Antibody Slows Down Alzheimers Progression

3/20/2015

A therapeutic antibody, adunacumab (BIIB037) from Biogen, has shown to reduce the amyloid plaque in the brain of Alzheimers patients. This is a true brake through in the Alzheimers research field.

“This is the first time an investigational drug for Alzheimer’s disease has demonstrated a statistically significant reduction on amyloid plaque as well as a statistically significant slowing of clinical impairment in patients with prodromal or mild disease,” said Alfred Sandrock, M.D., Ph.D., group senior vice president and chief medical officer at Biogen Idec. “Based on these results, we are advancing the aducanumab clinical program to Phase 3 with plans to initiate enrollment later this year.”

Take a Sneak Peek at the Capra Science Antiodies Farm at Winter

2/6/2015

During the season when the snow and cold weather has taken its grip on the nature, our animals are let inside.
They live in spacious environments with large window areas to enable a natural circadian rhythm and with interiors that enables them to practice their natural behaviors. For example, goats like to stand on high points to show their status in the rank. They also love to scratch themselves against rough surfaces. Some may think that these details seem insignificant, however they are very important in keeping a herd in social balance and good health. Ultimately, less stress and good health promotes strong immune responses.

Looking back at 2014

1/2/2015

While we are very much looking forward to the new year of 2015, we also wanted to take a moment and look back at what has happened at Capra Science during 2014.

These are some of the highlights:
Picture
  • Capra Science is chosen as antibody service provider by one of the largest Life Science companies in the world.
  • Our founder, Dr Lovisa Hessle Bergman,  is especially invited to speak at Nov2k, which had the 2014 Nobel Prize Winner Edvard Moser as keynote speaker last year.
  • We hired more personnel, and are now able to take on more projects.
  • We launched a new website
  • Even more so than last year, we've received excellent feed-back from numerous customers of different kinds of antibody projects.

These are things we are both happy about and proud of having achieved. The last point really makes us warm at heart since meeting and exceeding our customers expectations is what makes us grow and is of real importantace for us as we continue to move grow.

We now look forward to a new year with new interesting projects and new challenges to take on. We would also like to take the opportunity to wish all our customers and collaborators all the best for 2015!

Study Reveals Why Commercial Antibodies Fail

12/8/2014

There are several advantages to generating your own antibody for your project. A lack of trust for commercial antibodies is common among researchers, and a new study shows there are good reasons.

One of the biggest sources of frustration for researchers who buy their antibodies through antibody banks is they have to try several different antibodies before finding one that works. A new study now suggests the problem stems from extensive antibody inflation within the network of antibody vendors.
The study, conducted by Jan Voskuil (CSO of Everest Biotech Ltd), shows that the antibody vendors buy and re-label antibodies from each other, and not from the manufacturers, in order to ramp up the numbers of antibodies on stock. This results in the exact same antibody appearing multi-fold on many catalogues worldwide, often marked with outdated or incorrect QC data.

The issue goes deeper than this though. As it turns out, even buying the exact product as endorsed by scientific publications does not guarantee that you will get the antibody that was successfully used in the publication. This is due to flawed QA procedures taken on by vendors who re-label antibodies bought from other antibody banks without regarding batch-to-batch variation.

Judging by the extensive increase of antibodies these banks are offering, this problem will not go away any time soon. More likely it will become an even bigger nuisance as the banks expand their catalogues without buying directly from the manufacturers.

Stay tuned to see how custom antibody production at a manufacturer like Capra Science can give you significant advantages in your research, R&D and immunodiagnostics.
